Junior world record for Kejelcha!

Yomif Kejelcha put in one of the performances of the night – and the best 3,000m performance of the season – at the MEETING de PARIS on Saturday, breaking the junior world record in the 3,000m in a time of 7:28:19. The 19-year-old, who did not take part in the 2016 Olympic Games, finished ahead of Morocco’s Abdelaati Iguider (7:30:09; personal best) and another Ethiopian, Hagos Gebrhiwet (7:30:45), who earned a bronze medal in the 5,000m in Rio. The top French runner in the race, Yoann Kowal, finished 13th in a personal-best time of 7:45:11 – one of eight athletes to achieve such a feat on the night. Mahiedine Mekhissi Benabbad (FRA), who won a bronze medal in the 3,000m steeplechase in Brazil, came in last with a time of 8:15:19, while his compatriot, Bob Tahri, who had been sidelined through injury, did not finish the race. Albert Rop, meanwhile, broke the Bahraini record as he finished fifth in 7:32:02.
