Despite finishing seventh in the recent Olympic 800m final in Rio, Alfred Kipketer put that disappointment to one side and bagged a memorable win at the MEETING de PARIS. The 19-year-old, who triumphed in Monaco in July, finished in 1:42:87, which represents a new personal best for the Kenyan. In an extremely quick race that produced three personal bests and four season’s bests, Algeria’s Taoufik Makhloufi took second place – as he did in Rio – in 1:42:98. Jonathan Kitilit (KEN), finished third in 1:43:05. Another Kenyan, Ferguson Cheruiyot Rotich, who finished fourth in 1:43:43, is the new Diamond League leader. As for the French athletes involved, Pierre-Ambroise Bosse fell away towards the end, but still managed a sixth-place finish in 1:43:58. Samir Dahmani, who was ninth, beat his personal best with a time of 1:44:07.
