What a performance by Wayde Van Niekerk! The South African beat the African record in the 400m by five hundredths of a second (held for the past year by an athlete from Botswana Issac Makwala). In a time of 43’’96, the 22-year old runner treated himself to the luxury of dominating the reigning Olympic champion and leader of the Diamond League, Kirani James (44’’17). American David Verburg finished third in 44’’81. However, the Grenadian remains at the top of the League with a six-point lead over Van Niekerk.
