Decidedly, the Stade de France is cursed. Still no world record in the St-Denis arena, whilst that of the women’s 5,000m had looked set to tumble. Ethiopians Genzebe Dibaba and Almaz Ayana had agreed to run together and thus attempt to beat the record set by Tirunesh Dibaba (sister to Genzebe), dating back to 2008. Unfortunately their mission failed. Genzebe Dibaba won it in 14’15’’41, a new meeting record, but finished 26 seconds off the pace set by her sister in 2008. Ayana finished over six seconds shy of the winner and Kenyan Mercy Cherono took third place in 14’34’’10 (personal best). Another personal best was gleaned for Ethiopian Gelete Burka, who finished sixth.
