While it was no surprise to see reigning world and Olympic champion Sandra Perkovic justify her status as favourite to win the women’s discus at the Stade de France and collect yet another title in her glittering career, the 24-year-old Croatian left it very late, winning with her final throw of 68.48m. In doing so she set a new record for the MEETING AREVA, eclipsing the previous best of 65.53m, set by Cuba’s Yarelis Barrios in 2010. Taking second and third behind Perkovic were Australia’s Dani Samuels (67.40m) and the USA’s Gia Lewis-Smallwood (65.59m). France’s world silver medallist Melina Robert-Michon came fourth with a throw of 64.17m on her second attempt.
