Jakub Vadlejch, who finished ninth at the European Championships and eighth at the most recent Olympic Games, created a mild surprise in the javelin event at the MEETING de PARIS on Saturday evening. Courtesy of an eye-catching throw of 88.02m (a new personal best), which he achieved with his third attempt, the 25-year-old Czech saw off the challenge of Germany’s Julian Weber (87.39m), who took second. Reigning Olympic champion and Diamond League leader Thomas Röhler (GER) was third with a throw of 84.16m. Trinidadian athlete Keshorn Walcott, who claimed a bronze medal in Rio, finished fifth (82.40m), just behind Ukraine’s Dmytro Kosynskyy, who registered a new personnel best of 84.08m. Olympic decathlon silver medallist Kevin Mayer (FRA), who had decided to take part in the javelin competition, finished –predictably – in last place with a throw of 60.11m.
