Records tumble in the women’s 3000m steeplechase

The women’s 3000m steeplechase at the Stade de France proved to be no ordinary race, as a new MEETING AREVA record, a new Moroccan record, two personal bests and four season bests were set. Ethiopian runner Hiwot Ayalew’s winning time of 9:11.65 edged out the previous MEETING AREVA record set by Tunisia’s Habiba Ghribi in 2012. The USA’s Emma Coburn set a PB of 9:14.12 in taking second place, with Ethiopia’s Sofia Assefa third in a time of 9:18:71, good enough for her to hold on to the Diamond Race lead. In finishing fifth in 9:21.24, Salima El Ouali Alami set a new Moroccan record, while reigning world champion Milcah Chemos of Kenya ran a season-best time of 9:26.49.
