Finally! On Saturday, Bahraini athlete Ruth Jebet set the first-ever world record at the Stade de France, where the MEETING DE PARIS has been held since 1999. With a blistering run of 8:52:78, the precocious 19-year-old won the 3,000m steeplechase and broke the longstanding record (8:58:81) held by Russia’s Gulnara Samitova-Galkina, set at the Beijing Olympics back in 2008. Jebet, who appeared unconcerned by the warm 33°C temperatures, finished – as she did in Rio – ahead of Kenya’s Hyvin Kiyeng (9:01:96) and the USA’s Emma Coburn (9:10:19). In addition, the Oceanian record also fell, as Genevieve Lacaze (AUS), who finished sixth, recorded a time of 9:14:28. Ophélie Claude-Boxberger, the only Frenchwoman in the race, did not finish.
