Tsyplakov the surprise star

Whilst one might have been expecting Qatari Mutaz Essa Barshim to shine, ultimately it was the Russian Daniil Tsyplakov who won the high jump competition at the MEETING AREVA.

Javier Sotomayor can feel reassured, tonight is not yet the night that his legendary world high jump record will be broken (2.45m in 1993). Qatari Mutaz Essa Barshim, who came within two centimetres of it in 2014 and was hoping for great things at the MEETING AREVA, finally failed at 2.29m and finished fifth in the competition. Victory went to the Russian Daniil Tsyplakov (22 yrs), with a jump of 2.32m, ahead of Donald Thomas from the Bahamas (also 2.32m), beaten in the number of attempts taken. Greek jumper Antonios Mastoras finished third, with his season’s best (2.29m). Frenchman Mickaël Hanany finished last. He could not better 2.19m.
